How much might we receive in envelopes? An estimate for couples

Enter how many adults you invite, what the wedding costs and what your guest list looks like. See a range of envelopes and how much of the cost it might cover, without leaning on it.

Your details

Currency

Children do not give an envelope, so they are not counted here.

A couple usually gives one envelope, about 10% smaller than two separate ones.

Where is the wedding?
Guests' monthly net household income, in RON

If you do not know, leave 4,000 to 6,500, the default in our calculators.

Venue, menu, music, photo, outfits, decor and the rest. For a county seat we start from 750 RON, within a range of 550 RON to 1,100 RON. Estimates from the Romanian press, not official statistics.

On paper, the envelopes pass the cost line. This is an estimate, not a guarantee.

Expected scenario126%of the wedding cost: about 94,700 RON in envelopes, against 75,000 RON for the wedding.

On paper, the envelopes could cover the wedding with something left over. But the figures start from press averages and some guests give less, so check the prudent scenario too.

Wedding cost: 75,000 RON. The amounts above the columns are in RON.

This is an estimate, not a promise. Each guest decides what to give. Do not plan spending on the generous scenario, and do not count on envelopes for payments with a fixed deadline.

What moves the figure most

Each row changes one thing and leaves the rest as on the left. You see how far coverage would move in the expected scenario.

  1. Cost per guest 10% lower+14 points
Biggest effect here. 675 RON instead of 750 RON, for example with a cheaper menu or venue.
  2. Guests one income step higher+9 points
From 4,000 to 6,500 to 6,500 to 8,500 RON a month. You cannot control it, but it matters.
  3. Attendance 5 points higher+7 points
More invited guests confirm and come, at the same cost. RSVPs from the digital invitation show you early where you stand.
  4. 10 points fewer come as couples+1 point
Two guests on their own usually give slightly more than one couple.

Where you break even

806 RONthe average envelope needed from each person who attends. The model estimates 1,018 RON.
74 peoplewould need to attend for the envelopes to cover the cost, in the expected scenario. The estimate starts from 93 people.
+200 RONis left, on average, from each extra invited adult: their envelope goes past the cost of their seat.
How we calculated, and what is left out

We start from the indicative per-person amounts in the 2026 Romanian press (Capital.ro), by relationship and income. We mix them for a typical guest list: 38% family, 20% close friends, 20% friends and 22% colleagues. For friends we use the average of close friend and colleague.

Then we adjust for the city (between 0.92 and 1.12 against a county seat), couples (a shared envelope is worth 1.8 single envelopes, not 2) and attendance. The scenarios are 80%, 100% and 115% of the typical envelope. The cost is the cost per guest times all invited adults, because the venue and menu are usually paid for those who no longer come too.

Not included: godparents, relatives who give far above average, gifts in kind or transferred money, and the fact that some guests give less after a long trip. The amounts, costs and shares are press estimates and our own assumptions, not official statistics. Data updated in October 2026.

How to use the calculator

  1. Enter how many adults you invite (children do not give an envelope) and the total cost of the wedding.
  2. Choose the city and your guests' approximate income.
  3. Adjust how many guests attend and how many come as couples.
  4. Read the three scenarios: prudent, expected and generous.
  5. Plan the budget on the prudent scenario and treat the rest as a bonus.

Practical tips

  • Plan on the prudent scenario

Build the budget so you reach the day without any envelope, and treat envelopes as help.

  • Deposits come before gifts

Advances and balances are paid before the wedding. Have the money ready beforehand, not based on what you will receive.

  • Do not compare with other weddings

Envelopes vary widely between communities and families. Talk to your parents about what is usual in your circle.

  • Note who gave what

A notebook or the guest list in the app helps with thank-yous and, later, when you attend their wedding.

How we calculate, and where the numbers come from

We start from the Capital.ro table (2026) of recommended gifts per person by relationship to the couple. We assume a typical list: 38 percent relatives, 20 close friends, 20 friends and 22 colleagues or acquaintances. These shares are our assumption.

Some invited guests do not attend (7 percent by default), and some come as couples with one shared envelope, 1.8 times a single gift. We adjust for the city as in the guest gift calculator.

The three scenarios use 80, 100 and 115 percent of the typical gift. They are not predictions: they are three views of the same list, to show how much the result varies.

Gifts are voluntary. There is no guarantee they will cover your costs, and attendance changes until the last day. The calculator is useful for talking it through as a couple, not for planning a budget that depends on it.

Frequently asked questions

Do envelopes cover the cost of the wedding?

Sometimes part, sometimes almost all, but there is no guarantee. Press articles say recovery depends on regional customs and guests' means. That is why the calculator shows three scenarios.

What is the average envelope?

With the 2026 Capital.ro table, a single person's envelope falls between 650 and 1,900 RON, by relationship and income. The calculator combines these with a typical list structure.

How many guests do we need to break even?

The calculator shows how many adults would have to attend, in the expected scenario, for envelopes to cover the cost. If that is more than your list, the budget should not rely on envelopes.

Is it rude to calculate this?

No, it is responsible planning. The polite part is not expecting any particular amount from anyone and thanking people for every gift.

Does it matter if guests travel from far?

A little. Someone who travels far and pays for a stay sometimes gives less, and couples understand. The calculator does not model it, to stay prudent.

From numbers to your online invitation

An online invitation collects RSVPs for you, and your guest list and budget live in the same account. Table seating is added separately.
